American Kestrel

Both Terran and I find birds of prey amazing. We’ve always enjoyed watching the powerful birds glide over head or studying their profile while they watch for prey from trees or poles. We both have been surprised by the number of raptors we’ve seen while living in Reno. This weekend while on a walk and driving home we were fortunate to snap a few pictures of the colorful male American Kestrel – one of the few times we’ve remembered our camera and then actually seen something.

You know, in the close up it looks quite harmless. Just goes to show you what I don't know about birds. I love you, Mom

Beautiful pictures! I love the one with the American Kestrel's tail fanned out! I had the rare privilege of watching a Crested Serpent Eagle circling over the gardens in our neighbourhood. He had such distinct and unique colouring I had to look him up as soon as I got home.

Nice, I love birds of prey too. We have a few trees where you can spot literally dozens of bald eagles at once, but nothing as beautiful as this.
